thestar.com is LIVE!
December 18, 2006
Hey everyone!,
It has been a long time coming but the redesign of thestar.com (Toronto Star) has finally been launched at around 3pm today!
This was my first major project to work on since joining Torstar Digital at the beginning of October, and am super pleased with how the site turned out. The team and myself worked our butts off to make this super kick ass site, which will be put on steroids within the upcoming months with updates and improvements, so make sure you stay tuned.
Go check the site out at: thestar.com
Cheers
Mike

Congratulations, As the lead interface programmer on the recent CBC.ca redesign I know that redesigning a large scale site can be a nightmare. People don't realize how complicated a site like thestar.com or cbc.ca are - between CMS's that don't know the difference between a div and a class, dozens of backend systems, hundreds of people and mangers and signoffs and focus groups. You work day and night to do the best you can with what you have available in the time alloted and all you hear back from the users is - you suck! i liked the old site better - i can't find anything - it's too cluttered. It's funny cause if you go though the comments we got after our redesign they are almost identical to the comment you got. Especially the ones that say "I'm going to switch to ...". We had people saying they where going to switch to The Star and you have people saying they are going to switch to CBC - so i guess it all works out in the end :) Anyway good work to you and your colleagues. On to my next battle fighting off the CMS that "Will allow the writers to drag and drop elements of the site around and the system will create all the HTML automatically". Ya that's all I need 400KB of HTML and 200KB of CSS.
What do you think?
